An amazingly beautiful natural pool of melting water from the mountains of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park
Just outside the small whitewashed village of El Burgo – not far from the coast by Marbella and Fuengirola – the dirt track “Carril del Dique” goes along the river “Turón” – it sets off just as the main road crosses the river. A few kilometers up the gravel road you find the trail down to the dike – a little wall that has dammed up the melting water of the river and created an incredibly beautiful nature pool in between the trees. Here you will find both sunshine, shadow and beautiful nature.
If you come in a week end – or in August – here will be crowded with people escaping from town to cool down. But if you come on a week day outside of the Spaniards’ holiday season you can be lucky to have it all for yourself. And it’s simply beautiful!
The water is cold so you can not bathe for so long. But the children can run around in the low tide below the dike while you relax on the river bank – so it’s perfect for the entire family.
The river runs through the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, which is formed by the highest mountains on the western part of the Costa del Sol – and offers plenty of lovely nature experiences along the various dirt roads and paths. You may, for example, combine the visit to the nature pool with a hike starting at the nearby village of Tolox, where there are also waterfalls (unless there is no water left in the river).
From the coast you can make a nice roundtrip in a rental car; First drive up towards Coin, then to Tolox and El Burgo. After experiencing Sierra de las Nieves, cross over to Ronda and back to the coast by San Pedro de Alcántara.
